The Historic Hotels Touring Route project is an initiative of the Far North West Joint Organisation (FNWJO). Established in 2018, the FNWJO comprises the three Shire Councils of Bourke, Cobar and Walgett. In total the Joint Organisation covers an area of some 110,000 square kilometres and equates to approximately 13.5% of the total area of the State of NSW.
The route, which is yet to be named, will comprise a series of self-drive loops which follow some of the historic outback hotels that exist, and once existed throughout the bush. There are over 250 sites where hotels stand, or once stood, and all of them are full of stories.
The project will be developed in 2023- 2024 and will centre around a single website which will integrate maps, resources and stories, as well as social media channels so people can share their experience. The various routes will feature signage and physical markers to help travellers to navigate and learn the story of the region.
If you have any queries you can feel free to talk to your local council tourism officer, or contact the project coordinator.
